Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off the goal. -- Hannah More
So, it got me to thinking. What is my goal? Here's the deal. There isn't just one goal. I have many, but for today, my goal is to be a positive influence on the world around me. So, I devised this list of advantages of having breast cancer. Yep. There are advantages. There is ALWAYS a bright side. Find it. Share it. Let it shine.
Top Ten Fringe Benefits of Having Breast Cancer
1. No bra
~ no wires poking me in the ribs
~ no worrying about bra straps showing
~ no binding up the girls to make it through the day in a
professional, ladylike manner
2. Sleeping in
~ for six whole months (Good grief!)
~ no alarms
~ getting my 8 hours, sometimes 9, sometimes 10
~ this may never happen again in my life
3. Getting a vacation in the middle of the year
~ I can go wherever I want whenever I want. I can get in my car
and drive to the beach right now if I want to. I can go to
Starbucks at 10 in the morning if I feel like it. I can go grocery
shopping in the middle of the day. I can make my doctor
appointments for any time of the day I please. I can have
lunch with friends any day of the week.
~ I can spend time exploring my passions -- writing,
communicating, art, music, healthy living.
~ I can stay up late, take naps, wear jeans, take a bubble bath at
noon. Time is not an issue for this brief moment in my life.
4. Catching up on movies and books
~ I am a B movie freak! I watch Netflix, Pay Per View, etc.
~ I try to watch no more than one movie a day. I'm not a big TV
person, but a good bad movie is just so much fun.
~ I'm on book number 4 of my mini vacation reading. I haven't
had time to sit and enjoy a book in over a year. What a treat!
5. No housework
~ I'm learning how to relax and let go of little things like dust.
~ No one cares what my house looks like, because they know I
can't do anything repetitive. Being together is just about
relationship -- not show. How great is that?
~ I've learned how to give others the gift of taking care of me.
Plus, the boys are learning how to take care of a home on
their own. Giving them some much needed skills as they
become more independent.
6. New boobs
~ They will be cute.
~ They will be perky.
~ Still won't have to wear a bra. Ha!
7. Eating out whenever I want
~ Because of my weight loss, I can pretty much eat anything and
everything right now. I know this won't last, so I'm living it up.
~ No one expects me to cook every night because of my struggle
with fatigue.
8. Badass scars
~ I am a warrior princess. I have the scars to prove it.
~ I'm a tough chick!
9. Knowing who you can really count on
~ Sometimes, it take something really traumatic to teach us this
lesson. Now I know.
10. Having a signature color
~ Pink has meaning.
~ I love it that sometimes no one knows I'm wearing pink except
me. ; )
