You know that thing that I tell you about all the time? The one about how after cancer you still have all of this crazy doctor stuff you have to do? Well, this week, I went to meet my new oncologist. No bueno, people! She did not listen to me or my concerns. She actually shushed me and told me that I didn't know what I was talking about. She called me sweetheart and talked over me. Oh yeah. That happened. I want all of my fellow warriors to know that at no time do you have to deal with a doctor or care provider that you do not feel comfortable with. Ask for another referral. Be strong. Do not let someone treat you like you are unimportant. You are important!
So, here's how I got through that situation without shouting profanities or jumping across that silly woman's desk and decking her. I thought about the fact that I got to go home and sleep in my own bed that night, that I got to go home and take a shower in my newly remodeled bathroom, and that I got to go home and work on redecorating my own space. This got me to thinking about what a great stress reliever this is. Even on your worst days, thinking about home can make things better. It can get you through the next hour or the next hardship. Here's your job for this week. Make a list of the things that feel like home to you.
Here's my short list.
1. My dogs running up to me and giving me affection.
2. My own space where I can retreat and be all by myself.
3. A warm bubble bath in the privacy of my own bathroom.
4. My bed complete with my fluffy blanket and my comfy pillows.
5. My art supplies all readily available.
6. The smell of candle wax melting.
7. The hum of the dishwasher in the background.
8. The light shining through the windows.
9. Being in the presence of my kids and my grandson.
10. Pictures of great memories that I've shared with people I love.
Remember, even on your worst days, you will have the opportunity to go home. There's no place like home, my loves. Have a great week!
