Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.
Calvin Coolidge
Wouldn't it be nice if we had this peaceful spirit all year round? However, life happens, doesn't it? I think this time of year is a reminder to be the kind of person who wishes good for others, who gives second chances, who helps out those less fortunate. How fortuitous it is that our holidays come at the end of the year so that we are rejuvenated and ready to go into the new year with a sense of peacefulness.
In the meantime, we have to get through this holiday. On top of the stress that comes with this busy season, I have the weird experience of going through what can be a really trying time of year with missing body parts. There are days I simply don't know what to do with that scenario. But, lucky for all of us, today I do.
So, here's my tip for keeping that peaceful state of mind.
Prepare as much as you can ahead of time.
Big holiday meals, if you decide to not take yesterday's advice, are well suited for making ahead. A lot of baked goods and roasted foods taste even better when reheated the following day. Also think slow cooker for reheating things like mashed potatoes or gravy. No worries about burning and everything stays warm. Don't forget to consider all the dishes and equipment you'll need for your meal. If you can purchase or set the equipment up ahead of time, your life will be much easier. No running to the store in the middle of cooking your favorite recipe. No figuring out what baking dish to substitute for your 9 x 13 that you broke last week. If you can make at least half of your dishes a day or even two ahead, you will be able to sit down and enjoy time and good food with your family when it's served up.
Peace out!
