New Worlds Chapter 2
We arrived on the front porch of Aunt Tootie's brown stucco house a few minutes after sunrise on the Saturday after school let out. My cousin, Vicky, answered the door with pigtails in her hair and her thumb in her mouth. The smell of dusty leather books, sunshine, and coffee embraced me as I stepped through the open door. I could hear Uncle Bob whistling and pots and pans clanging in the kitchen. On the floor, mystery novels and romance novels as thick as War and Peace lay in piles. I could barely make out names like Melville, Shakespeare, and Hemingway on the dusty spines of the volumes lining the bookcase. Aunt Tootie sat curled up in the summer-warmed room wearing silk pajamas. Her long braid glittered like a platinum chain in the sunlight filtering through the lead glass windows of the living room, and the gold bangles on her arm jingled as she uncurled her legs from under her and opened up her arms toward me. I set my little brown leather suitcase with the gold clasps on the floor and flew to her sinking into the yellow overstuffed cushions on the sofa. Already homesick, I looked into her glittering green cat eyes and tried to smile.
A few minutes later, Mom was out of there with a wave of her hand and an admonition to "be a good girl for Uncle Bob and Aunt Tootie." I didn't see or hear from her for three whole months, not until the week before school started back up.
