When I had cancer, my goal was to get healthy and to become stronger than I was before the big C came into my life. Lofty goal, but guess what. I'm there. I used to think that goal setting and working hard was just that . . . work. However, I have found that like most things in life, it is a lifestyle. It has to do with making decisions about what I want out of life, what legacy I want to leave when I am done here on Earth, and how I choose to spend my time.
Today, I want to encourage you to make a list of your current goals and your future goals. I want to give you permission to choose what is important to you and to not just walk through life getting through each day. Look forward and enjoy every single moment. It's your life. You get to make the decision how you live it.
Just a note about some of my goals so that you can see how easy this is:
Current Goals
1. Learn how to replace my lawn
2. Save enough money each month to do a remodeling project on my home
3. Get the HVAC contractor out here this week to fix the duct system
4. Increase my run by 1/2 mile this week
5. Finish all of my work before 9:00 pm each night, and if there is still work left to do, let it go. It will be there tomorrow.
6. Schedule a hike for this month
Future Goals
1. Schedule demolition by the end of the month
2. Save money to take a trip to Ireland
3. Attend social events and meet new people
4. Attend at least 1 concert each year
5. Attend at least 1 professional baseball game each year
6. Purchase a piano and start playing again
7. Find a publisher for my book
Could I set goals for being thinner or about furthering my career? Sure, but is this really what I want out of life? If those are the things that make you happy, by all means set some goals. Just keep in mind the practice here is to enjoy life and to make sure you are working toward happiness.
