This post wasn't really about me telling you how wonderful my life is. I really wanted to tell you how I think through these things, so that you can learn how to change your mind frame too. It really. Here's my favorite exercise for finding the good in all situations:
Write about any upsetting event that you are experiencing. Here's the kicker, though. You have to write about these events from the perspective of a dear friend. Offer comfort and encouragement, acknowledge what made the situation so lousy, and list the strengths that will help you bounce back from it.
Here's my letter to myself this week.
Dear Marla,
I know how exhausted you must be. You are working so hard. I'm not even sure why you feel the need to take on so much work when you are not being compensated for it. However, I know that one of your gifts in this world is to nurture others. Because of the work you are doing, there are literally hundreds of kids that know they are not being left behind and that someone cares. Don't forget to take care of yourself and let others help you. I know your heart is full, and I love seeing the pride and happiness on your face when you are able to help the educators and kids that you are supporting right now. I am always here for you.
Sincerely,
ME

That's it. Simple. Powerful.
Will you try it this week? Leave me a comment to let me know how it goes. I can't tell you what this has done for my life. My life is rich and full. I am blessed to be surrounded by amazing people, an abundance of love, and inspiration around every corner. I guarantee that if you make this exercise a habit, you will find the same joys in your life.
