I wanted to share something with those of you going through your own cancer journey or just life changes. There is a phenomenon that happens during these times, and I don't want you to fall into the trap of thinking it's bad. Here's the truth. People will leave you when times get hard. This is not a negative thing unless you let it be. It's a cleansing, and yes, it can be painful just like when your cleaning out your closet or doing one of those 3 day juice cleanses. It's just the process of getting rid of the crap. These are relationships you don't need anymore. Even if in the moment you think you need them, I promise you --- you don't. You've got this. You've got this all on your own, because you are so much stronger than you've ever thought you were. You are amazing and courageous and tough. Yes, you are!
Here's the super good news. You will also find the people who belong with you. The people who stay. They people who will have your back no matter what. You never really know who these people are until the dark times come. Life changes. This is the ultimate truth about life. You will be so pleasantly surprised and blessed when you figure out who the people are that will honor these changes and grow with you.
My oh so wise daughter discovered this truth years ago. I've always said she's an old soul. I found this poem that she wrote when she was a teenager, and I want to share it with you now.
Friendship
by Janie Lane
Friendship; sweet as candy.
Bitter as dirt.
Long-lasting like Wonka's Gobstoppers.
Fake like artificial sweetener or red dye obstacles.
Standing in the way like a candy bar you will feel guilty about later.
Making you sick but at the same time, craving more.
Craving bitter-sweet friendship.
I wish I could call out all the names of the people who have been there for me, because I really do have the most awesome tribe on earth. That would take a while, though, and I don't want to bore you. Besides, you all know who you are.
Here's to hoping you find your people and that you are able to weather the changes with grace.
Happy four year anniversary to me!
